I was making dinner Sunday evening, when all of a sudden I felt weird. I couldn't talk or type and started crying. Cliff figured it out, and drove me to the hospital.
The emergency room took me in immediately. The doctor gave me tPA, which is a clot buster drug they use if it's within 3 hours. And then I was put ICU from Sunday to Tuesday afternoon. Regular room on the Neurology floor until Thursday pm. Foley catheters kinda suck.
I have no family history of stroke and have few risk factor. So they ran tons of tests. Two CT scans, an MRI, an EKG, an EEG(? brain thing), a carotid ultrasound, and echocardiogram. The MRI showed signs of a previous stroke, but it must have been minor. Probably the numbness I felt from my neck to my knees about a couple of weeks ago. I wrote about it here.
The echocardiogram showed the first possible cause, other than birth control pills. We all have a hole in our hearts when in utero, but it closes up. Mine didn't. But the neurologist still is doing a blood test for a genetic disease called Frey's disease, because it can cause strokes in people under 40. I turned 37 this month.
My mind wasn't affected, however I sound retarded. This entry has taken all day, with lots of breaks. Typing is good occupational therapy. I have a bit of weakness in my leg, but it doesn't stop me from walking. I just lose my balance sometimes, like when I put on my pants. And I seem to be clumsy and knock in to things on my right side.
I start speech therapy and occupational therapy next week.
