My put-upon mate

Cliff goes to see the surgeon today. Hrm. I should do a flashback to explain things.

Heh. Cliff's side was hurting and he went to the doctor and discovered he had a gall stone the size of marble. Though before he went, he kept thinking it might be his appendix. I mocked him and said in Schwarzenegger style "Maybe it's a tumor!" and told him to go see a doctor. That turned into him whining me into making the appointment for him. It seems everyone I know who feels pain in the abdomen thinks it's the appendix and it never is. Granted with Lynda it had been colon cancer but it still wasn't her appendix! (Binah note: I did not do the "tumor" joke to Lynda. We just told her to go to the doctor.)

Is an appendectomy some kind of romantic surgery? Oh the drama of dying from a burst appendix! Oh doctor! His side hurt and an hour later he died from a burst appendix! Such a tragedy! *sob*

I kid because I love. But evidently appendicitis would have been preferable to Cliff. He's decided a gall stone means he's getting old. I reminded Gramps that Kimmi had her gall bladder out when she was 33, so a gall stone is no indicator of impending dotage. He complained I was raining on his mid-life crisis parade, because after all, he was almost 50!

Me: Whaaa? Since when is 46 nearly 50?
Cliff: Well, my birthday is in May! You're only in your thirties! You don't understand! *not very serious pout*

Despite the squabbling tone, I was cheering him up. We talked about the things that are making him feel his mortality. As he'll be "almost 50" for years, I'm sure this topic will come up again.

I don't know if the surgeon will suggest taking out the gall bladder or suggest blasting the stone with whatever technology. I asked Kimmi about it. She said that she was told that since the gall bladder isn't necessary, doctors just remove it if it develops any problems. Kimmi had laparoscopic gallbladder surgery involving 3 tiny incisions and the gall bladder was pulled out through the one incision in her belly button. I wouldn't be surprised if the surgeon recommends this. If this is what the surgeon recommends, Cliff will probably stay home recovering for a week.
