I also saw Memoirs of a Geisha. I generally enjoyed this one, but I was surprised by the ending. I don't want to spoil, so I won't mention why I was surprised. The movie does a good job of detailing the sexual politics of the Geisha's life in the early to middle of the 20th century. It's not oscar worthy, imho, but worth watching. I have a feeling that a truly great movie could have been lurking in this film, but didn't quite come out. I'm not sure if its lack is from the book or from the storytelling.
Memoirs of a Geisha made me want to see Raise the Red Lantern, which I guessing brings up some of the same sexual politics issues in a Chinese rather than Japanese context.
